NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
The NEBOSH International General Certificate develops knowledge of workplace health and safety management and the practical skills needed to assess and control risks. It is suitable for managers, supervisors, people with health and safety responsibilities, and learners beginning a career in occupational health and safety.

Current qualification and assessment
The current qualification follows the 2025 specification and has two units: GIC1 – Management of health and safety and GIC2 – Risk assessment. GIC1 is assessed through a scenario-based open-book examination, followed by a closing interview. GIC2 is a practical workplace risk assessment. Your accredited NEBOSH Learning Partner will confirm registration, assessment instructions, submission dates and learner support.
The final assessments for the earlier 2018 specification took place on 5 August 2026 for IG1 and 6 August 2026 for IG2. Learners retaking assessments after the transition move to the equivalent GIC unit. If you hold an earlier unit result, ask your Learning Partner to confirm your remaining requirements and registration arrangements before booking.

Choosing your Learning Partner
NEBOSH qualification enrolment and assessment registration must be arranged through an accredited NEBOSH Learning Partner. Before enrolling, ask NISHE to confirm the Learning Partner’s name and number, who will register you for the qualification, and the respective roles of NISHE and the Learning Partner in teaching and learner support.
Also confirm the delivery mode, timetable, total fee, included services, assessment charges, resit charges and applicable terms in writing. Programme availability and arrangements can vary between batches.
Certification and career development
Successful learners receive the qualification awarded by NEBOSH after meeting its assessment requirements. The knowledge and practical skills can support professional development in occupational health and safety. Employer requirements and professional-body membership criteria should be checked separately for the role or progression route you intend to pursue.
